MAY CALENDAR OF EVENTS:
May 1: Mount Pleasant Neighborhood Association – Operation Brightside Clean-Up. Meet @ 9 AM in front of the Mount Pleasant Park Sign (Dakota & Michigan). Clean-Up will be from 9 AM – Noon. Coffee, donuts, water, and soda, provided and grilled hamburgers & hot dogs provided by Kress Law Firm. There will be some yard tools, trash bags, and gloves for all volunteers to use. If you have tools, please bring them. Even an hour of your time will be a huge help to the neighborhood. MPNA membership will be paying for decorative mulch that will be spread that day. If you have a wheel barrel and larger shovels, this would be a big help to make things go quicker for everyone. We are targeting the following public areas for trash pick and cleaning: Mount Pleasant Park, Osceola and Virginia Garden Island, Vacant Lot and Liberty and Virginia (VAL), and the Broadway and Osceola Garden Island.
May 1: Community Gardens Ground-Breaking @ 1 PM @ VAL (vacant lot at Virginia, Alabama, and Liberty). There will be short ceremony and then work will begin on building the raised beds, filling them with compost, etc. If you have tools, please bring them: wheelbarrows, shovels & spades, 5-gallon buckets, rakes, hoes, and battery-operated drills/screwdrivers. the neighborhood. We have 5 different routes to choose from. Each route takes
less than 30 minutes. If you are able to help with a route or routes, please

Announcements - PLEASE READ:
1) Bring Your
Empty Cartridges to DSCC! We receive at $3 credit at Office Max for every
cartridge we recycle. We are able to earn up to a $60 credit each month. This
credit will help cover the cost of our office supplies. Our walk-in hours are
from 9:30 AM – 4 PM; Monday through Friday. If you need to come after our
walk-in hours, please call DSCC at 352-4865 so that we may accommodate you.
2) St. Vincent
DePaul will install grab bars in bathrooms for seniors 65 and older. The grab
bars will be installed free of charge by experiences volunteers. For more

3) The Carondelet
Family Literacy Program is a Free Program for adults which provides
opportunites to: improve reading & math skills; learn English (ESOL); and
prepare for GED testing. The program operates Monday through Friday from 9 AM –

4) Low Cost Spay
& Neuter for your Dog or Cat. While your having your pet spayed or neutered
you can also receive vaccinations and license at a discounted rate. This service
is for pets of residents living in the City of St. Louis who are low income,
using government assistance, and/or fixed-income seniors. For more information

5) Carondelet
Senior Center – each week there is an array of activities for seniors. Every
Wed. & Fri. join the Senior Center for Arthritis Exercise; and Fridays you
can take computer classes to sharpen your technological skills. For more

6) SLATE Youth &
Family Career Center and Better Family Life is now being housed out of Lyon at
Blow Community Education Center. Youth services are being offered on Wednesdays
from 2 PM - 8 PM. Career Center Services are offered on Mondays from 1 PM - 5
PM and on Fridays from 8 AM - Noon. Better Family Life services are offered
on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1 PM -
5 PM. There is job training, resume writing, and experienced counselors waiting
to help train you to get back into the workforce. Come by and see what they can
do for you to start a new career or enhance an existing one. They have
information on many different careers. Lyon at Blow Community Education Center

7) Circuit Attorney’s Fraud Assistance Phone Line:
314-612-1412. The Fraud Assistance Line Can: 1) provide assistance for victims
of fraud or exploitation; 2) answer your fraud-related questions; and 3)
provide help in implementing the recommendations made by the taskforce related
to credit reports, contractors, and suspicious offers.
8) Don’t Turn off the Lights! Safety is a very important
issue in the City of St. Louis. Offer your support in the battle against crime
by turning on your front and rear porchlights each night. Did you know? It only
costs you $17.95 per year to burn a 60 watt light bulb from dusk to dawn. Help
make your neighborhood safer…for you!
9) You can help future juries realize the impact that
drug crime has on your neighborhood. How…? By coming to court and simply
telling the jury about your neighborhood. We want to help jurors open their
eyes to the people behind the addresses in the neighborhoods where drug crimes
occur. You will not have to accuse anyone of a crime or identify any person. We
simply ask you to represent your community with a few minutes of your time and
your couraeous voice. If you are willing to participate, or for more

10) A reward is being offered for the arrest of any
individuals for burglary or theft from any vacant or occupied residence. Many
of these buildings are burglarized by persons posing as workers. Call 911 when
you see what appears to be workmen in alleys, backyards, or entering or exiting
buildings, especially vacant property. For more information call 444-0176.

Project Safe Place: A crisis prevention program for children and teens. When
kids need help fast, they can go to "Safe Place Sites," local
businesses or organizations that display the yellow and black Safe Place sign.
All employees of designated Safe Place sites are trained to give the young
person a quiet place to sit while they call the Youth In Need 24-Hour Hotline.
A Safe Place case worker will immediately be sent to pick up the child, assess
the situation, and offer necessary assistance. For more information about

636-946-3771. Youth In Need located at 3001 Meramec (at Minnesota) is a
designated "Safe Place" for youth.

Adopt Youth In Need and make a big difference in the lives of homeless children
and teens. The following items are needed: bottled water, toothbrushes, new
socks, new & large coats, hand sanitizer, toothpaste, blankets, new
hats/gloves, new sweatshirts, band-aids, and pop-top canned food items. For

13) REPORT NUISANCE BEHAVIORS!
Nuisance Behavior Includes: public drinking; loitering in front yards,
sidewalks or streets; using, distributing and/or selling illegal drugs;
prostitution; playing music or conversing loud enough that your neighbors can
hear you; overcrowding. Call the police Each And Every Time you observe a
nuisance behavior. 1) Dial 911 for an emergency or 231-1212 for a
non-emergency. 2) Say, "This is a Nuisance Property" and give the
address of the nuisance property. 3) Be prepared to give specifics about What,
Who, When and Where. 4) Tell your alderman and NSO so the property will be
documented as a nuisance. Don't know who your alderman or NSO is? Call DSCC at 352-4865
we will find out for you.
14) Watch out for contracting
scams! Do your homework before hiring a contractor. DSCC has Contractor List
with tips for researching & hiring a contractor at our office. Please call

15) Trouble Paying or Behind on
Your Mortgage? Call the United Way at 2-1-1 to receive a list of resources. Get
help that will get you back on track and help you stay out of foreclosure.
Being in foreclosure can be overwhelming and stressful. Get help from a
trustworthy and knowledgeable resource. Help is available; don't be afraid to
reach out. Beware of scams - don't sign anything you don't understand. Beware
of "counseling" services that charge any fee for help with mortgage
troubles, as well as phone or mail offers that seem too good to be true.
16) Free Credit Report - You have
the right to get a free copy of your report, once every 12 months, from each of
the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian and
TransUnion. For more information on obtaining your free credit report, call

17) Register to Vote! Voter
registration cards are available at the DSCC Office located at 4204 Virginia
(at Meramec). They are also available at the public library and the post
office. You can also request a registration form be mailed to you by calling
622-4336.
